Galveston Island Film Festival & Conference at Various Locations

Galveston is world-renowned for a lot of things â its sunny beaches, beautiful Victorian homes, vibrant downtown historic district and its laid-back residents.

Island native Sherrill Hilton is taking the cityâs diversity to another level with the first annual Galveston Island Film Festival and Conference (GIFF-CON), set for Oct. 5-7, 2018.

âWeâre an international film festival, so we are pushing for people from Galveston County and all over the world to submit their films, so their voices can be heard,â she said. âWe want voices of every walk of life and from everywhere to be heard.â

For three days this fall, Galveston will be bustling as filmmakers, Hollywood executives, producers and stars soak in the sights and sounds of the island, and attend screenings and panel discussions.

The conference will cover just about every aspect of the film industry landscape, from distribution deals, to production incentives, and partnering with the Texas Film Commission.

A major goal of the conference is to assist filmmakers in choosing Galveston as a prime location for future movie projects. To that end, attendees will have the opportunity to tour the island on trolleys, golf carts and shuttles.

âGalveston is unique for being a coastal island, so the weather here is pleasing, and you have a lot more versatility in venues,â said Hilton, a director, producer, dancer and choreographer. She returned to Galveston last year after working 15 years in the Hollywood entertainment industry.

âWe want to spotlight diverse up-and-coming filmmakers across the world,â Hilton said. âWith our film festival, we want to compliment the island's other major events, like Mardi Gras Galveston, the Lone Star Rally, Dickens on the Strand and the Historic Homes Tour.â

Tapping her Hollywood connections, Hilton has enlisted a stellar panel of judges to select the winning films in six genres: drama, action, comedy, fantasy/sci-fi, inspirational and musical/dance. The festivalâs celebrity ambassador is actor/writer/producer Michael DeLorenzo, of âNew York Undercoverâ and âCSI: NYâ fame, as well as movies.

Hilton has assembled a star-powered production crew that includes Martel Shaw, an assistant director and point person for the festival; Oscar Garcia, director of photography and technical director; Chris Crane, director and post-director; Torthell Robinson Content Coordinator and Ricardo Perez, sound director.

GIFF-CON also will highlight the importance of diversity in the film industry, Hilton said.

âThe festival will address issues of integration, diversity and new technology in the entertainment industry,â she said. âIt will provide a platform for aspiring creators who are not yet in the mainstream, but use their unique voices to express their artistic points-of-view.â

The 35th Annual Greek Festival, October 13 - 14, celebrates Hellenism with food, wine, pastries, and dancing. Presented by Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church at 1824 Ball St., festival hours are Saturday, 11 am â 8 pm and Sunday, noon to 6 pm. Rain or Shine.

Two full days of Opa! and YaSou!, the event features authentic food prepared on site, Greek wines, live dancing and entertainment, gifts and tours of the Greek Orthodox Church. Traditional Greek favorites include beef or pork souvlaki (shish kabob), gyro, vegetarian dishes, and a complete dinner of pastitsio, salad, dolmades, olives and meat balls. Pastries are baked by the ladies in the community and are served individually and in assorted boxes to go. Specialties are baklava, melomacarona, kourambiedes, koulourakia, and paximadia. Donât miss the made to order loukoumades; a honey puff pastry drizzled with honey, and homemade sweet bread.

The gift shop will feature Greek Christmas ornaments, icons, jewelry, paintings, dolls from Greece, stefana (wedding crown) boxes and much more. Grocery items include olive oil, olives, pasta, and imported canned goods. Unique and hard to find imported items are great for gift giving. For kids there is a petting zoo on the patio.

Live Entertainment is complimented by Greek dancers who perform throughout each day. Dance participation following each show is encouraged.

Galvestonâs premier juried fine arts Festival - will transform historic downtown Postoffice Street into an open air gallery bursting with color and culture from all over the United States. Presented by The Grand 1894 Opera House, the festival will take place Saturday, October 20, 10am -6pm; and Sunday, October 21, 11am -5pm; and will represent 14 different forms of artistic media. The event will be held in the heart of Galvestonâs Downtown Cultural Arts District on Postoffice Street between 20th and 23rd Streets.

Created in 1997 by founding coordinator Kathy Modzelewski to promote fine art in the Galveston County area, the event has grown from 30 artisans and 500 attendees to over 100 participating artists from across the U.S. showcasing their work to more than 7,500 attendees.

During the past twenty-one years the festival has grown in popularity and will extend its footprint this year to include an additional block. In addition to the extensive selection of art, festival goers can also enjoy a wine bar, Galvestonâs Farmerâs Market, food trucks, interactive art activities for children, a young collectors' gallery - for children only, daily live musical performances, an emerging artist tent showcasing College of the Mainland students, and so much more. And also this year, the event will feature new participating metal artist Craig Riches from Silverhill, Alabama â who will share share Craigâs Metal masterpieces with the Galveston community.

ARToberFEST admission is $5 for adults; children under 12 free. A portion of admissions will benefit the Educational Outreach Programs of The Grand 1894 Opera House. About the 1892 Bishop's Palace
Bishopâs Palace, also known as the Walter and Josephine Gresham House, is one of the islandâs best known and most popular tourist attractions. Bishopâs Palace is recognized as one of the nationâs most important late 19th century Victorian residences. Nicholas Clayton, Texasâ most accomplished architect of the period, designed the house for the Gresham family. In 1921, Galvestonians raised money to buy the house for the Galveston-Houston Archdiocese to make it the home of Bishop Byrne. GHF purchased the property in 2013 from the Galveston-Houston Archdiocese. The foundation is the third owner of the property and assumed management in 2007. It welcomes over 65,000 local, national and international visitors each year.

Galveston's premier fall festival - the 37th Annual Island Oktoberfest - kicks off Friday evening, October 26 from 5-11pm; and continues Saturday, October 27 from 11 am - 11 pm. This fun, family weekend will feature continuous live entertainment on three stages, an expanded menu of authentic German food and libations, Cake Wheel, shopping for fine arts, crafts and gifts in the historic 1860 Lyceum; a lively auction, new and exciting fun, family children's activities, and much more. Oktoberfest will be held on the grounds of and streets adjacent to First Lutheran Church, 24th and Winnie - in historic downtown Galveston.. Admission is free. German costumes encouraged. This year, festival goers can look forward to more of everything â¦ that is German!

Island Oktoberfest, hosted by First Evangelical Lutheran Church and co-sponsored by Del Papa Distributing Company, will open Friday evening with themed-Bier Garten venues - featuring a variety of both German and domestic brews and a variety of German-style wines. Again, this year, Oktoberfest will feature special beer and wine tastings -paired with a delightful array of appetizers. In addition to great music and dancing, there will be superb food including smoked sausage, bratwurst, knockwurst, and "Wurstabendessen"- a sausage dinner comprised of German-style and Polish style Wurst with all the traditional German side dishes. This special German Dinner will be available both Friday evening and on Saturday. For a sweet finale, homemade Helmut's strudel (freshly baked on site), will be offered in addition to a variety of tempting home-made desserts - specially prepared by congregation members from recipes handed down from generation to generation. Hand-made pretzels, freshly-popped popcorn, and a variety of soft drinks will also be sold at the festival.

The historic and beautifully-renovated circa 1860 Lyceum will again be open Friday evening and from on Saturday with vendors showcasing exceptional hand-crafted arts, crafts, and gift items for those festival goers eager to get a head start on holiday shopping. Because Oktoberfest continues to be one of the vendors' most enjoyable and popular venues, regular attendees can look forward to shopping at their long-time favorite booths - each featuring Christmas and other special gift items.

Island Oktoberfest admission is free. Attendees are encouraged to dress in German costume. No animals will be allowed on the festival grounds.
